Mesh Desk Prototype

A CNC MILLED PLYWOOD DESK

STE-AD have built the first prototype of the Mesh Desk! It was a success and also a learning experience to discover what can be improved and refined. The next step will be to create Mesh Desk 2.0 and ready them for purchase online.

A few improvements that the Mesh Desk 2.0 will include are listed below:

  • Built-in concealed cable trunking

We found that adding the cabling after the desk was built was manageble but would be much better suited to have routes of cable trunking built-in to the back of the desk.

  • Hardware Improvements

Version 1.0 has many hardware considerations, such as magnetic latches, a piano hinge for the drawer panel and of course the remote controlled actuator.

On Version 2.0 we will add gas strut closers to control the descent of the screen and storage panels to avoid slamming. We are also looking at making the screen panel smart to connect it to your Smart Home devices.

  • Flip-top Desk  / Drafting Board

The double desk feature of the Mesh Desk works as planned and is incredibly useful in order to conceal the clutter you make in a days work without relocating everything to a storage room.

After using the desk for a few weeks we decided that it would be great to have the desk top hinge upward to access the closed drawer below. The desktop would have to be split into 2 to 3 sections so that the whole desk does not hinge upward at once. This would be made into a drafting board surface that can be mounted at an angle.

  • 3D Printed Modules

These are customizable inserts that plug into the opening at the top right corner of the desk.  These can be swapped in and out depending on how the desk is being used. For example – one insert to hold all of your office supplies, another that has your art or hobby supplies, or another that can hold your devices for calls, etc.

We will update again when Version 2.0 is available!
