At STEAD, our design philosophy centers on a deep understanding of both client vision and environmental context. The Yugen House project in Niseko, Japan, exemplifies this approach, showcasing a seamless integration of contemporary design with the region’s dramatic natural beauty.
From the outset, the unique challenges of Niseko’s heavy snowfall guided our architectural decisions. The concept of **snow shedding** was not merely a functional requirement but a generative force, shaping the building’s distinctive rooflines and overall massing. This innovative response ensures structural resilience while creating a dynamic aesthetic that resonates with the surrounding winter landscape.

Inside, Yugen House offers a sanctuary of refined comfort. Our interior design team meticulously selected natural materials and developed a serene color palette, enhancing the connection to the outdoors. A cornerstone of the project was the creation of **custom furniture and fabricated elements**. Each piece, from integrated shelving to bespoke seating, was designed in close collaboration with skilled artisans, ensuring it complemented the architectural narrative and optimized the living spaces.
The living room, captured in our final photography, stands as a focal point, framing breathtaking views of **Mt. Yotei**. This deliberate connection to the iconic mountain underscores the project’s commitment to harmonizing built form with natural splendor. Yugen House is more than a residence; it is a thoughtful response to place, a result of collaborative craftsmanship, and a nod to Niseko’s unique environment.
