The balustrade at Yugen House is a study in the tactile and visual qualities of contrasting materials. In this detail, the design focuses on the junction where traditional timber meets industrial polycarbonate.
A handrail of solid oak provides a warm, natural touchpoint, with the grain left visible to ground the assembly. Below, the infill consists of a 3-wall polycarbonate panel. This material was selected for its translucent properties; the fine vertical ribbing catches the light and offers a sense of depth without compromising the openness of the stairwell.
The polycarbonate is held within a slim metal channel, providing a clean transition between the timber and the translucent panel. In the background, a geometric wire wall sculpture sits against a white wall, continuing the dialogue of lines and shadows that defines the interior of the house.
This assembly reflects the broader design approach at Yugen House: a focus on material honesty and the precise execution of functional elements.
